While it may be tempting to try those weight loss or “fat burning” products that those nutrition super stores in the mall offer, don’t do it. According to the New York Times, dietary supplements make up about 20% of drug-related liver injuries that turn up in hospitals.
Since there isn’t a lot of regulation in the supplement arena, it can be dangerous to try all of those products with their amazing claims. Often, people who are showing signs of liver damage can recover once they stop taking the supplements and receive treatment; but that isn’t always the case. In some instances, patients die due to liver failure or require a liver transplant.
Things to Consider Before Taking Any Supplements:
- Remember, the FDA can’t regulate supplements at all until after they’ve started hurting people.
- If the claims a product is making sound too good to be true, they probably are.
- Talk with your doctor about any supplements you are thinking about taking, they can help you decide if it’s worth the time and expense.
- Be sure to tell your doctor about any and all supplements that you are taking; they can interact with prescription medications and have side effects all their own.
